Battle of Reading vs Writing Method in L2 Acquisition

Hi everyone!

Just like the tittle, today I would like to present my result of searching the comparison between reading and writing method used for L2 learning and acquisition.

As it's turn out, there are some similarity in a way they act as a method also there are some opposition. So, let's check what they are!

First thing first, before we jump to the main points, I'm going to highlight the similarity between two journal that I have had review. Both journal seek in various way or strategic to Second Language Learning. The different is that first journal use reading method whereas the second journal use writing as a method. However, both of the journal focus in Second Language Acquisition and Development.

Both reading and writing method considered as a minor role. The lack of reading culture makes reading appear as minor method to language learning despite on how much goodness in reading. Same went with writing, as writing usually considered as a result regarding the fact that writing acquires a lot of aspect to comprehend and the assessment of writing indicate that one's language development is well.

Read and write contribute in early stage of language learning. As they read and write they simultaneously gain vocabularies, subconsciously create a system in language learning, make meaning and empower their literacy. Thus, if reading and writing emerge as repetitive activity will improve their language learning acquisition and development. The interaction in reading and writing make learners more aware and get involved in learning process.

However, there are few differences between reading and writing. Reading motivated and enhanced by the help of scaffolder. Reading is social practice that if exposure from the environment is lacking will affect negatively to the reading interest of the learners. If lack of reading happen at early stage of learners' development will affect them until they grow up. Whereas in writing happen in internal student. Writing activity involving cognitive and mental process. As they write they mature their thinking skill and subconsciously create a system that will benefit their language learning.

Even all the goodness in reading and writing method, they also face some challenges. As for reading, one of the challenges, is the lack of reading exposure make learners dislike the process of it. Thus, on the journal, the researcher tried to seek various way in improving the reading culture so the learners will happily engage in reading and language learning. Whereas writing, one of the challenges, the slow processness of writing appear writing as a minor role of developing language learning even all the goodness that writing had. As for the journal, researcher tried to seek the solution how writing appear more approachable in language learning development.

In conclusion, both writing and reading actually an efficient method in language learning development, even there are some weakness in both of them.

The essential role of writing

Hi everyone!

Today we are going to continue our discussion, still related to why writing is unpopular skill to learn language.

As I said before, writing is often seen as a result of language learning rather than procedure, because in order to write, learners have to develop their language first. To teach writing course effectively, the learners must at least have decent writing skills. However, in this research, researcher try to emphasize and raise awareness of writing.

In general, there are 3 major process of writing that stimulus language learning. First, as learners write they begin to negotiate the information to their schemata. Then, learner try to make sense of the information. As the information added to the schemata, eventually they practice the language in daily basis. 

The input and the output of writing affect the early stage of language acquisition. Thus, the process repeated and create a system that develop the learners language ability. 

The process of writing that are permanence and slow process raise the learners' awareness in language learning as they consume and produce language both during before and after writing production. However, the slow process downsize the impact of writing in language learning for it takes time to finally learners develop their language ability. Beside, there is nothing to do about it, because the essential of writing will vanish if we shorten the process.

However, the interaction and negotiation between learner and writing will facilitate language development. That is why, writing may contribute in language learning development.

Writing role in second language development #journalreview

In this post today I would like to invite you to another analysis of second language development. As you may have read before, I examined the role of reading in learning second language. However, today, I'm going to choose the less popular skills to learn language, which is writing.

I know right.

Why is writing unpopular skill to learn language? 

Some people or even some researchers often seen writing as a minor in promoting second language (L2). That is because writing often seen as a result rather than a way to learn second language. Supposed one say if their second language development is well, just look at their writing skills. In addition, learning language by oral is better in a way that it takes less time and the output will last longer than writing.

Come to think about it, other than reading I learn L2 best by writing. However, not to be biased, my curiosity genuinely want to know if writing can be good source of language development.

Apparently, nowadays writing is considered an activity that may promote second language development. Role of writing can facilitate the process of language acquisition and development. The journal exposed that writing can encourage cognitive process as well as interactive moves to promote language acquisition. The opportunity in language use also greater. 

In further discussion upon this journal will describe the center role of  explicit knowledge and the relationship between language learning and second language writing.

In this post today, I would like to more emphasize why reading is an effective method to learn language as well as conclude my journal review.

One say best way to learn is through experience, reading makes you had experienced something. For instance, if you by chance reading something, thus it will kept in your memory, and just like that you gain new knowledge.

As important as it is, reading should be exposed at an early age as possible in order to build reading culture. That way, they get motivated to read and aware of the benefit of reading. If learners have the awareness of reading, they know how important it is, and start to make reading as an essential activity.

To develop reading culture, environment play a big role, including parents and teacher. Parents should exposed reading to their children as early as possible. Thus teacher, as a second parents in school, should provide and facilitate various reading material and strategies in order motivate children.

Reading is a complex process, but enable learners to gain literacy and another skills. As the world evolve including social media, it is important if people keep being updated with what happen in the world by reading. That is why, if people don't have any motivation to read, they would get left behind.

In this journal, researchers always emphasize the importance of reading and how to motivate reading culture. I think that this journal is interesting as it is raise the current issues of our society which is the lack of reading, meanwhile there are so many reason why we should reading in the first place.

Today, I would like to tell you about the further explanation of my previous post. In this post, I would further analyse why the lack of reading culture is happened and how to overcome it in order to learning language by using reading as a method.

First of all, one said best way to learn is through experience hence it'd be difficult to learn if the learners hadn't exposed with at an early age. According to the article, most South-African students born with low rate of reading environment moreover even some of them dropped out from school. 

To adapt reading culture, learners should exposed with it at an early age so they will develop the interest to it because once they notice the benefit from it, they will be obsessed and eventually develop reading culture. However, because some learners didn't get the exposure, teachers need to use various strategies to overcome it.

Beside teachers, environment needs to help children fascinated with the importance of reading by develop habit to read, so it would become attitudes and eventually character. It's undeniable that the lack of reading culture is very much affected by the legacy, so like it or not, school have a huge responsibility to develop reading culture.

Fortunately, most of South-African parents aware of education as the only weapon to change the world, so they send their children to school. Beside getting the education, students learn global language and acquire themselves motivation to keep study. Hence school should promote education that full of motivation, this way education act as a bridge to success.

According to Ezc (2006) asserts that the role of school is to be responsive to vast and variety needs of each in the school environment. Schools should provide various reading materials according to students' interest since in order to be success children need proper exposure to improve their foundation skills to acquire another skills.  As a country whose mother tongue is not English multilingualism is major challenge. As English suggested to be mastered by everyone. 

Reading as a method to learn language is a complex process but it will enables learners to gain knowledge, enjoy literature, and acquire another skills. Reading is important activity with a handful of information. As a teacher should understand the processes of reading. Reading should be done steadily and continuously in order to be absorbed by children. 

According to Goodman (1967) reading process convincingly when he states that a) Readers develop sampling strategies to pick up most useful and necessary graphic cues. b) They develop prediction strategies to use when their prediction do not work out and they need to reprocess the graphic, syntactic and semantic cues to get the meaning. It means that needs to acquire their own way to learn in order to understand the materials easily.

Some alternative strategies include skimming technique and cooperative reading. Skimming will help the learners build their own story schema and enhance their reading speed. As for cooperative reading, it will motivate learners to share knowledge as it will be more widely used.

This article believe in cognitive and social constructive development that children will learn best if they interact with other children to develop their own understanding. One of reading activity to approached is directed reading-thinking activity, it will build readers who constantly seek for knowledge, it will also help readers to determine and examine their goals, it will promote higher order thinking skills by justifying thought process and drawing logical conclusion, and eventually will make children constantly blend their own thinking to comprehend information.

To conclude, to use reading as a method to learn language, reading should be a habit first, it should develop at an early age. Environment have huge role in motivate children to read, they should exposed the reading culture as early as possible. Even thought reading is a complex process, it will give a lot of benefit to the children.

Following my previous post about practice reading as a method to learn language, in today post I would like to present my in-depth explanation why we should use reading as a method to learn language and how to emerge them.

However, first of all, we should know why we should learn language specifically English. It is unquestionable that English known as a global language that used to connect speaker whose native language are different. In that manner, English used to unifying diversity, thus one should learn English in order to associate themselves with the world.

In addition, English is also used in all fields whether to consume, produce or distribute. Thus, this should motivate non-native English speaker to learn the language.

English nowadays focuses on a context meaning rather than grammar function. Hence, English mainly used as a social practice in order to make English be as approachable as possible. 

Learners expected to be able participate actively in order to emerge motivation within themselves. To practice, learners can use English in social activity or read all possible exposed text in order to make them more familiar with English.

Expertise believe that the best way to learn language is to make them use it by themselves since they will be actively engaged. This belief is known as Constructivism theory which believe that the best way to learn is to construct our own knowledge rather than constructed by the others.

This theory also enable learning process without any pressure or anxiety to learners. Since the learners learn because their own willing thus it will make the learning process easier and more active and conducive. Rather than having other input complicated theory to them, they will learn to make sense the theory by their own.

Reading is recognized to be the best method to learn language. The reason are reading is easier to be exposed to the learner, and with the right start reading can also be the best way to learn, because it is fun without any pressure or anxiety. 

Beside, reading is considered important in nowadays society. Today, world evolve through social media rather than interpersonal interaction, so if one lacks the desire to read, they would be left behind because they unaware with recent condition within the world.

To emerge reading culture, it should be exposed at the very early stage by environment. Having harmonious atmosphere from home, school, peer groups reading is the best way to approach reading to the children. This exposure can shape their mind to be more enjoy in reading. As Nwabueze (2011) stated that an environment plays a very significant role in the development of reading culture in the learners.

Reading culture should be exposed as early as possible because if not it will affect to their future. If one lacks of desire to read, it will grow with them and see reading as a pressure. 

As it was stated, environment plays a very significant role in reading culture, because they will be the one who educate the children why reading is important, and give a lot of exposure and encouragement. Since child views people older around them as a role model, so it is their task to expose and introduce reading activities to children. Bad start would affect to them negatively and they would be discouraged not willing to read.

Beside of parents, teacher have their own important role as a second parents in school, the should give sufficient love and care in order to promote reading. As stated by Ezc (2006), the role of a school is to be responsive to vast and variety needs of each in the school environment. It is encourage teacher to use different techniques to promote reading. They should provide a variety reading materials to interest learners.

Teacher should be able to relate reading with other subject thus they should be creative. Teacher should know what is best and provide conducive classroom condition. Teacher should introduce learners to a peer group. For peer group, the learners should each sharing ideas together thus motivate them to acquire knowledge by themselves. Rodgers (1997) stated that children learn more with their peers since they are fully and freely exposed in their interactions to share ideas. This strategies will make reading more interesting and meaningful thus can emerge their reading culture.

In conclusion, to learn language especially English is important to be a world-society who keep up with current information. The best method to learn language is reading, because it empower literacy. In order to do that, reading should be exposed to the learner as early stage as possible, and that is the environment's big role to emerge reading culture to children.

We are kicking off this new semester with Michael G. Scott in the form of gif because in this semester we are gonna rock it off!

In this semester I still gonna do some review, however rather than book this time is international journal or international article that I am going to review. Right now, I would give you some glimpse into matters of my review.

Tittle of the article that I'm going to review is Reading as a Method of Language Learning among L2/First Additional Language Learners: The Case of English in One High School in Alice, from the writer John Wankah Foncha.

There are a lot of reason that I ended up choose this article, however I'm gonna narrow it into two. First of all, it quite excite me because it used reading as a method. I myself consider reading is essential not only for learning but also for our life. I see reading as the first skill in order to master in any skill. 

To increase literacy one must read. 

Second of all, the topic that the writer discussed is somewhat similar and related to what my country been through. The case was a lot of student in Alice, South Africa having trouble to speak English as their First Additional Language because the lack of practice and reading culture. Students got small exposure to the English speaker, and the fact that they use their home language in home and communities make it hard for them to earn language learning and acquisition. Moreover, the lack of motivation to read is increasing smaller exposure to English Language. To be honest, it is similar to our problem in Indonesia.

By review this journal I hope that it gives me a glimpse to what should be solved in order to make English as First Additional Language is approachable . 

This journal consider reading as a critical and serious problem to student in language learning and acquisition pursuit. In attempts to increase reading culture, this study found various strategies to earn student awareness in reading. In which the various strategies need helps from parents, teacher and environment to motivate learners to read.

The researcher learn to understand where the lack of reading culture increase, and use several strategies to increase the reading culture. The researcher believes that once the learners grow interest in reading, they can turn it into positive attitude which will become a culture. As the research going it turns out that there are several factor that can make the learners grow their reading interest.

To know what are they, one must wait until my next update. Ehehehe
